Snare drum history

The history of the snare drum goes back till the 19.century. It is the time of the French revolution. Respectively, the effects and results of it are relevant for the history of these time. It relives the lansquenets drum, that was applied with the military until then.

At this time, in the year of 1809 a French invents the can. The option of the conservation of food allows it the army to shorten the times of rests. The Soldier’s and Officers have not to be engaged about new food sources, but in the planning of the campaign the question of the rationing can being considered. Therefore the troops are faster prepared for combat mission, times for rest were shortened. The lansquenets drum is no longer suitable for military use cause of it’s weight. It is too heavy. The drummers cut the shell to save weight. The sound but of the cut shell was to high. The background noise of this time was stewed with metallic sounds (muskets, canons), already. To gain attention again, drummers to fasten the gut snare assembly under the cut shell. In music history that is it is to lend the snare drum a warlike effect.
With this snare drum arises the traditional grip. It is based on, the drum was not like the predecessor model course of is weight hanging straight in front of the drummer but occupies a slant position. The drum so takes in her central position to gravity. This position keeps even stable roughly while marching respectively was supported to be hold stable trough a distance keeper that holds the drum distant from the thigh.

The drummer has to be able to bridge over that born edge.
