I think the most fundamental need for the colonies to gain independence was the fact that more and more folks have moved to the colonies. They also moved further westwards since space on the east coast got scarce. Now, the transmission of messages to and back from England took longer and longer. The distance was longer. So decisions favouring to survive the frontier had to be made locally. It's all the same pretty often in history, I think.
